Munroe Dairy & Sacred Cow

is a family-owned, Providence-based dairy company founded in 1881 that specializes in home delivery. Currently, they sell a variety of locally-sourced products, from milk and yogurt, to fresh produce, coffee, and granola.

Sacred Cow is their all-natural granola brand, hand made with grains, nuts, seeds, and fruit.

Project Purpose

My first experience with Sacred Cow granola was when I received a jar as a gift from a friend. After the mason jar sat on my desk in front of my laptop for a couple of weeks, I came to the conclusion that, compared to its wonderful taste, the branding could be improved and updated to better suit a younger audience.

In addition, I wanted to challenge myself with a 24 Hour time limit to see how much I could accomplish under pressure & how thoroughly I could think through my designs.

Restrictive vs. Limitless

how this project was transformative

  • Branding Design is about crafting a complete story.

    • Without branding, the consumer would have difficulty consuming. A consistent brand guides its audience to how to understand a company, a person, or a product.

  • Design is Restrictive.

    • Much like engineering, Design has its constraints. Whether it’s the specific audience, the limited color palette, or the constrained number of materials, there is always a strict aspect of design.

  • Design is Limitless.

    • Much like art, Design allows for unlimited creativity. While there are constraints, what is possible is endless. It’s like writing a sonnet or poem: there is a strict requirement on the number of lines, but what I write about is completely up to me.

Tools & Skills I Used

  • Traditional sketching to ideate logo rebrand designs after researching & creating a concept

  • Pinterest for moodboard images

  • Adobe Illustrator to vectorize sketches & create type-based logo

  • Adobe Photoshop to mockup designs onto & photoshop granola into jars for visualization

If I Had More Time, I would…

  • spend more time sketching newer & more creative ideas, branching out from obvious imagery

  • research further into the brand & incorporate the brand’s voice into the designs

  • expand mock-ups to granola in pouches & other containers
