“Home” Poster Design

a diptych of posters to signify where i’m from & where i’m headed

Concept Development, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

final project (open prompt) for VISA 0150: Digital 2D Foundations

project duration: 1 month

Project Purpose

This diptych was created as my final project for my Digital 2D Foundations course. The prompt was open-ended, with the only requirement being that I incorporate both Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator.

I had a couple of ideas for my project, but I ultimately decided on this one because I felt that capturing the feeling of “home” was appropriate for the occasion; this was my first class as a transition from high school to college, and COVID had allowed me to explore my interest in design in Korea, where I was visiting extended family for a few months.

As you can imagine, being in this limbo state in Korea, with my past in San Diego, CA, and my future in Providence, RI, I thought a lot about what “home” meant.

I made the posters as a pair signifying a major event in my life, in the same way I would design a poster for a set of concerts or ceremonies.

The Details

The Purpose of Two

On the left is my childhood hometown, San Diego, CA, and on the right is my current home, Providence, RI. Because I made this piece when I was in Korea, the space between the two represents the time I found home in neither city.

The Dates

The dates are the days I left for and came back from Korea— in a way, signifying the end of who I was and the beginning of who I’m going to be.

The Geography

San Diego is diverse in topography, but I like to think of it as having hills upon hills. Rhode Island is the Ocean State, and because I have no memories associated with the physical place, I decided making the geography floating islands was fitting.

The Buildings

Houses on stilts, like they could pick up and move any time. That’s what they did; like I do, they adapt to their surroundings and find home beyond a physical space.

The Words

From “youth” to “journey,” “west coast” to “out east.” The words below the dates are various texts from friends pieced together to create a personal description that only I understand, and they, together, evoke a sense of home.

The Red Dots

With “west” and “east,” the red dots symbolize the end, then the following beginning, of chapters in my life. Like the sun, I set, then rise again.

Home, from surface to soul

  • Design is purposeful.

    • My “Home” poster design has an overall purpose— visually reflecting my experience with “home”— and the details, in addition to having their own reasoning, contribute to this larger theme.

    • Much like a story, this poster diptych has a beginning, middle, and end. The poster has houses and landscapes, but it’s about home and journeying from one place to another.

  • Design is innovative & original.

    • Like art, with the same prompt, and maybe even with the same experiences, another designer would have produced something entirely different.
